چکیده

Chronic arsenic intoxication has been an issue of public health concern in some countries in Asia, such as Taiwan, Mainland China, Bangladesh, India, and Thailand. In Taiwan, an endemic peripheral vascular disease known as ‘blackfoot disease’ (BFD) located in a confined area along the southwestern coast of Taiwan attracted the attention of the government and the scientific professionals since mid-twentieth century. The arsenic contents of the drinking water taken from the artesian well were found to be higher than the normal standard value. Epidemiologic studies confirmed the association between arsenic exposure and BFD. Besides, the residents of this area were also found to have higher prevalence rates of skin lesions (hypo/hyperpigmentation, hyperkeratosis, and skin cancers), bladder cancer, ischemic heart disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus etc. than other areas of Taiwan. In China, arsenic-related diseases have been noted since 1980s. Three routes of arsenic intoxication can be identified there. In Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang province, the

Epidemiology and toxicology of arsenic poisoning in domestic animals.

Arsenic poisoning is one of the more important causes of heavy metal poisoning in domestic animals. Two species--dogs and cattle--are intoxicated more frequently than other animals; yet sporadic instances of poisoning have been observed in cats, horses, and pigs. Cases observed by veterinary clinicians are either peracute, acute, or chronic intoxications. Frequently the initial and only indicat...

Arsenic-related Bowen's disease, palmar keratosis, and skin cancer.

Chronic arsenical intoxication can still be found in environmental and industrial settings. Symptoms of chronic arsenic intoxication include general pigmentation or focal "raindrop" pigmentation of the skin and the appearance of hyperkeratosis of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. In addition to arsenic-related skin diseases including keratosis, Bowen's disease, basal-cell-carcinoma,...

Vascular Dysfunction in Patients with Chronic Arsenosis Can Be Reversed by Reduction of Arsenic Exposure

Chronic arsenic exposure causes vascular diseases associated with systematic dysfunction of endogenous nitric oxide. Replacement of heavily arsenic-contaminated drinking water with low-arsenic water is a potential intervention strategy for arsenosis, although the reversibility of arsenic intoxication has not established. In the present study, we examined urinary excretion of cyclic guanosine 3 ...

Arsenic intoxication as a cause of megaloblastic anemia.

We have described a case of chronic arsenic intoxication associated with pancytopenia and megaloblastic erythropoiesis. The patient had the typical laboratory manifestations of effective erythorpoiesis due to a megaloblastic process, including macroovalocytes, mild pancytopenia, low reticulocyte index, increased marrow cellularity with erythroid hyperplasia, and morphologic evidence of megalobl...

Folate, Homocysteine, and Arsenic Metabolism in Arsenic-Exposed Individuals in Bangladesh

Chronic exposure to arsenic is occurring throughout South and East Asia due to groundwater contamination of well water. Variability in susceptibility to arsenic toxicity may be related to nutritional status. Arsenic is methylated to monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) via one-carbon metabolism, a biochemical pathway that is dependent on folate. The majority of one-carbon...
